Historic Coventry Trust

April 2022

This year we have been developing a partnership with Historic Coventry Trust - "Historic Coventry Trust is part of a new breed of ‘heritage development trusts’ which are creative, dynamic and entrepreneurial in their approach. With a vision firmly focused on the future, our heritage needs to be relevant to people and economically useful. Find out more about our projects past, present and future."

We have been working towards bringing The Shape of Sound into historic places in Coventry, one of these being The Anglican Chapel in London Road Cemetery:Paxton’s Arboretum. Our next performance will take place in this new site in early May. We are also hoping to bring the installation and performance to Charter House, another historic building in the care of the Historic Coventry Trust.

By bringing the work into historic locations the performances begin a conversation with site. Together, the Anglican Mortuary Chapel and Charterhouse raise contextual questions around fluctuating embodied receptions of listening and touch over time. Relations to the departed as they had been (in part) negotiated between local pagan rites and universal Christian rites prompt site resonant questions on how current understandings of the somatic body relate to the fluctuating understandings of the departing souls that were and continue to be honoured in chapels.

Subsequent performances (subject to additional funding from Arts Council) will take place in and around the apple store between late 2022 or early 2023. These performances will build on the exchange with the public at the Anglican Chapel and address diverse understandings of the enclosed garden, the monastic rhythm as well as silence, perceived to be the language of the future by the monastic order, and of chanting as a means of communicating between human and non-humans.
